The Confident Midwife Leader

A year-long leadership development experience for midwives ready to lead with greater confidence, influence, and impact.

Leadership in midwifery is about far more than holding a title.

Whether you're leading a practice, mentoring colleagues, chairing a committee, influencing change within your organization, teaching, conducting research, advocating for the profession, or simply stepping into greater leadership in your everyday work, leadership requires confidence, self-awareness, courage, and practical skills that are rarely taught.

The Confident Midwife Leader has been created specifically for midwives who want to intentionally develop those skills.

Over the course of a year, participants will join a small cohort of like-minded midwives in a highly interactive leadership journey that combines practical leadership education, coaching, self-reflection, peer learning, and real-world application.

This is not a management course or an academic leadership program.

It is an immersive leadership development experience designed by midwives, for midwives.

What You'll Experience

Participants will take part in:

  • Monthly Leadership Learning Labs, where we'll explore practical leadership concepts, frameworks, and skills through discussion, activities, case studies, and real-world examples.

  • Monthly Leadership Coaching Circles, providing a confidential space to reflect, receive coaching, share experiences, and learn from one another.

  • Lumina Leader and Lumina Leader 360, helping you better understand your leadership strengths, preferences, and the impact you have on others.

  • Individual Lumina debriefs to support your ongoing leadership development.

  • A practical Leadership Impact Project, allowing you to apply your learning to a real initiative, opportunity, or leadership challenge within your own professional context.

  • A professionally designed Leadership Field Guide and curated leadership resources to support your learning throughout the program.

  • A virtual Leadership Summit and Graduation to celebrate your growth, showcase your leadership journey, and prepare you for what comes next.

What We'll Explore

Together we'll explore topics including:

  • Developing your leadership identity and confidence.

  • Building trust and psychological safety.

  • Leading difficult conversations with clarity and courage.

  • Giving and receiving meaningful feedback.

  • Coaching and developing others.

  • Building healthy, accountable teams.

  • Navigating conflict and organizational complexity.

  • Leading change and influencing without authority.

  • Strategic thinking and systems leadership.

  • Creating the kind of workplace where people choose to stay and thrive.

  • Developing your own leadership philosophy and future leadership plan.

Throughout the program, you'll be encouraged to experiment with new leadership behaviours, reflect on your experiences, and apply what you're learning in your own workplace. Leadership is developed through practice—not simply through learning.

Who Is This Program For?

The Confident Midwife Leader is designed for midwives who are currently leading, beginning to lead, or seeking to expand their influence across clinical practice, education, research, governance, policy, organizations, and the broader healthcare system.

You may already hold a formal leadership position—or you may simply know you're ready to lead more intentionally.

Participants may include:

  • Practice partners and practice leads.

  • Managers, directors, chiefs, and program leaders.

  • Educators and researchers.

  • Board and committee members.

  • Midwives leading projects or quality improvement initiatives.

  • Emerging leaders preparing for future opportunities.

  • Experienced midwives who lead through influence rather than title.

The Transformation

Our goal isn't simply to help you learn about leadership.

It's to help you become the kind of leader who:

  • Knows themselves and leads with confidence.

  • Communicates with clarity, curiosity, and courage.

  • Builds trust and develops others.

  • Navigates difficult conversations with confidence.

  • Leads teams through challenge and change.

  • Thinks strategically and influences beyond their formal role.

  • Creates positive, lasting impact within midwifery and the healthcare system.

Program Timing

The inaugural cohort will launch in February 2027.

Participants will learn together over approximately twelve months, including a summer pause, concluding with a virtual Leadership Summit and Graduation in February 2028.
