The Confident Midwife Leader
You're already leading. Or you know you're ready to. Now imagine what you could do with the confidence, skills and influence to lead really well.
A year-long leadership development experience for midwives ready to invest in becoming the leaders they want to be.
Maybe you've been leading a practice or team for years, figuring things out as you go. Maybe you've recently stepped into a leadership role and discovered that clinical expertise doesn't prepare you for everything leadership demands. Or perhaps you're ready to step forward, speak up and have greater influence, but aren't quite sure how.
You don't need more years of experience. You need the opportunity to intentionally develop your leadership.
The Confident Midwife Leader is designed for midwives who have had little or no structured leadership development, regardless of how long they've been leading.
Imagine having the confidence to navigate difficult conversations, influence decisions, build stronger teams and lead change. Understanding what motivates people, why they respond the way they do, and how to bring out the best in them. Learning to see the bigger picture, navigate organizational dynamics, think strategically and understand how systems work so you can influence them more effectively.
Not just doing more as a leader. Becoming more confident, capable and effective in how you lead.
That's what this year is about.
A Year to Actually Practise Leadership
This isn't a management course or an academic leadership program.
It's an immersive leadership development experience designed by midwives, for midwives.
Over approximately twelve months, you'll learn alongside a small cohort of midwives who, like you, want to grow.
But you won't spend a year simply learning about leadership.
You'll spend a year practising it.
You'll take what you're learning into your real leadership life. You'll try things. Have conversations. Take some risks. See what happens. Reflect on it. Get coached. Adjust. And try again.
You'll discover things about yourself, develop new skills, challenge old assumptions, and build relationships with midwives who understand the realities of your work.
Because leadership development shouldn't sit in a binder or a desk drawer.
It should change how you think, how you show up, and what you're able to accomplish.
What You'll Experience
Your leadership journey will include:
Monthly Leadership Learning Labs: Interactive sessions exploring practical leadership concepts, frameworks and skills through discussion, activities, case studies and real-world examples.
Monthly Leadership Coaching Circles: A confidential space to reflect, receive coaching, work through real challenges and learn alongside other midwives.
Leadership Assessment and 360° Feedback: An in-depth leadership assessment and 360° feedback process to help you understand how you lead, where your strengths lie, and how others experience your leadership, including a private one-to-one debrief of your 360° results.
Leadership Impact Project: An opportunity to put your developing leadership skills into action through a meaningful initiative, opportunity or challenge in your own professional setting.
Leadership Field Guide and Resources: Practical tools, reflection activities and curated leadership resources to support your development throughout the year.
Leadership Summit and Graduation: A virtual gathering to celebrate your growth, share what you've accomplished and look ahead to where your leadership might take you next.
What We'll Explore
We'll focus on the leadership skills and capabilities that make a difference in the real world, including:
Knowing yourself and developing your leadership identity.
Building confidence, credibility and leadership presence.
Communicating with clarity, curiosity and courage.
Navigating difficult conversations, conflict and feedback.
Understanding influence, power and organizational dynamics.
Building trust, psychological safety and healthy teams.
Coaching, mentoring and developing others.
Creating accountability without damaging relationships.
Leading change and navigating uncertainty.
Thinking strategically and understanding the systems you work within.
Building sustainable teams where people choose to stay and thrive.
Developing your own leadership philosophy and plan for continued growth.
You'll have opportunities to apply what you're learning throughout the program, with coaching, feedback and support along the way.
Is This Program for You?
The Confident Midwife Leader is for midwives who are ready to take their leadership development seriously, but haven't yet had the opportunity to build a strong foundation of leadership knowledge and skills.
You don't need a leadership title. And you certainly don't need to be new to leadership.
You might be:
A practice partner or practice lead who has learned to lead largely through experience.
A manager, director, chief or program leader who wants to feel more confident and effective in their role.
An educator, researcher or mentor looking to strengthen their ability to lead and influence others.
A midwife involved in committees, governance, advocacy or quality improvement.
An experienced midwife who wants to contribute more broadly to the profession or healthcare system.
An emerging leader who knows they have more to offer and wants to develop the skills to take that next step.
If you've already completed extensive formal leadership development, this may cover ground that's familiar to you.
But if you've been leading without much formal preparation, or you're ready to begin developing those skills intentionally, this experience was designed with you in mind.
You don't have to arrive feeling confident.
You do need to arrive willing to learn, reflect, challenge yourself and try doing things differently.
An Investment in You. And in the Difference You Can Make.
Think about the years you've invested in becoming a midwife.
The education. The clinical experience. The continuing professional development. The countless hours spent becoming better at what you do.
Now think about how much time you've intentionally invested in learning to lead.
For many midwives, the answer is surprisingly little.
Yet leadership shapes so much of our professional lives: the conversations we have, the teams we build, the decisions we influence, the challenges we navigate, and ultimately, the care we provide.
Your clinical expertise got you here. Developing your leadership skills can help you go further.
Investing in yourself as a leader isn't about becoming more important or collecting another credential.
It's about becoming more capable. More confident in your decisions. More effective in your relationships. More willing to step forward when something needs to change.
And the benefits don't stop with you.
When you grow as a leader, the people you work with, the teams you support, and the profession you care about can benefit too.
You've invested in becoming an excellent midwife. You're worth the investment in becoming an excellent leader.
Who Will You Be at the End of This Journey?
We can't promise that leadership will suddenly become easy. It won't.
But our goal is that, by the end of this experience, you'll be a leader who:
Knows themselves better: Understands their strengths, patterns, values and impact on others.
Leads with greater confidence: Is more willing to speak up, make decisions and step into challenging situations.
Communicates with skill and courage: Can navigate difficult conversations, give feedback and build stronger relationships.
Brings out the best in others: Builds trust, develops people and contributes to healthier, more accountable teams.
Has greater influence: Understands how to navigate organizations, contribute strategically and help move ideas forward.
Can lead through change: Has practical tools to respond to uncertainty, resistance and complexity.
Sees new possibilities: Has a clearer sense of the leader they want to be and what they want to contribute next.
And you won't just leave with new knowledge.
You'll have practised new approaches, received meaningful feedback, worked through real leadership challenges, and taken action on something that matters to you.
Our hope is that you finish this program not only leading differently, but seeing yourself differently.
Not as someone waiting to become a leader.
As someone who has deliberately invested in becoming a more confident, capable and influential one.
